About 40 Day Living
An Educational Homestead in Clinton, Maryland
Welcome to Our Land
We’re Cheryl and Malik Williams, the stewards of 40 Day Living.
40 Day Living is our educational homestead in Clinton, Maryland. It is a working urban farm where plants are grown and knowledge is grown and documented alongside them.
This is where we cultivate nursery plants, prepare plant-based wellness products, study plant science and build a growing archive of what we learn. It is both our workplace and part of our daily life. What you see here reflects ongoing work, not a staged setting.
Who We Are
Cheryl is the founder of 40 Day Communications, the parent company behind 40 Day Living. For more than 15 years, she has worked as a Department of Defense contractor providing video production, photography, print services and technical support. Over time, her documentation work expanded to include plants, land and cultivation practices.
She is a Certified Master Gardener in Prince George’s County and continues structured study in plant science and horticulture.
Malik brings a background in Information Technology and sales. He supports daily operations, inventory organization, systems management and customer service. His role ensures that plant production, wellness preparation and fulfillment stay organized and consistent.
Together, we manage the land, the nursery, the wellness line and the educational work that connects it all.
How 40 Day Living Connects to 40 Day Communications
40 Day Communications documents environmental knowledge, including the heritage and cultural history connected to plants.
40 Day Living operates in equal balance alongside that work. It is both the applied practice of the documentation services and the primary income-producing division of the company.
The plant nursery and online retail store generate revenue through plant sales and plant-based wellness products. In time, the homestead will also offer workshops and structured training events.
We benefit from the research conducted through 40 Day Communications. That research helps us intentionally grow plants that are well-suited to Maryland’s climate and growing conditions. It also informs how plants have been used throughout history for food, care and daily living. That knowledge guides how we curate wellness products today.
By growing, preparing and documenting this work, we aim to increase awareness of plant and land stewardship in practical, visible ways.

Our Framework: The Four Pillars
The structure of 40 Day Living is guided by four pillars developed through the Rooted Kin framework:
- Plants – Growing and supplying healthy plant material.
- Wellness – Preparing and curating plant-based wellness products.
- Mental Health – Encouraging rest, reflection and connection through gardening and plant care.
- Legacy – Preserving plant knowledge, cultural heritage and documented cultivation practices.
These pillars shape how we work and why we work this way.

What We Mean by an Educational Homestead
An educational homestead is a working property used for both cultivation and learning.
For us, that means:
• Growing and selling healthy, locally raised plants
• Producing and curating plant-based wellness products
• Studying plant science in a structured way
• Testing small-scale urban growing systems
• Sharing practical information through our blog
• Building a long-term archive of plant knowledge
This is a place where the human voice is quieter and the volume is turned up on the plants; their growth patterns, their needs, their history and what they’ve had to say over time.
We observe.
We grow.
We document.
We share.
What We Do Day-to-Day
Our daily work includes:
- Planning and maintaining nursery inventory
- Starting seeds and propagating plants
- Monitoring plant health and soil conditions
- Photographing and recording plant growth
- Preparing plants and wellness products for local pickup and shipping
- Writing educational articles
- Organizing inventory and customer support
The work changes with the seasons, but the purpose remains steady.
Grow With Us
Some people come here simply to purchase healthy, well-grown plants.
Some come for plant-based wellness products prepared with care.
Others come to learn more about plant science, cultivation methods and plant heritage.
Whether you purchase a plant, choose a wellness product, study the educational material or follow along as we continue building this homestead, please know that we are genuinely grateful. Your support allows this work to continue. It allows us to keep growing, studying, preparing and sharing.
You can explore the nursery, read the blog or visit the archive to see how the work develops over time.
We grow the plants.
We prepare the products.
We document what we learn.
And over time, what we nurture nurtures us.
That is 40 Day Living.
