At 40 Day Living, we believe environmental stewardship begins right where we are: in our backyards, our neighborhoods and the spaces we choose to tend with care.

What started in 2013 as a modest backyard hobby in Clinton, Maryland slowly became something much deeper. Working the soil, learning plant habits and observing seasonal rhythms first felt like education, with nature as a classroom teaching patience, responsibility and care. Over time, that same classroom began offering something unexpected: restoration.

In 2023, we officially registered our land as a USDA farm plot, formalizing what had already taken root: a commitment to grow thoughtfully, tread lightly and honor the ecosystems that sustain us. But the real transformation had already begun long before the paperwork. Caring for plants became a mirror. As we learned how to nurture living things, we learned how to slow down, listen, heal and tend to ourselves.

40 Day Living is more than an urban farm and plant nursery. It is a living classroom; one that teaches through soil, seasons and stillness. Here, plants are not just products; they are teachers. From cultivating pollinator-friendly native plants to nurturing locally grown herbs and seedlings, each offering represents a lesson in balance, resilience and renewal.

Our certified Monarch Waystation stands as both a promise and a practice: to create safe havens for pollinators and to teach others how to protect fragile ecosystems. We grow what we can on our land and source what we need through a trusted network of Southern Maryland growers, ensuring that every plant we offer carries intention, integrity and care.

At the heart of our work is a deeper calling — one rooted in faith, resilience and rebirth. The name 40 Day Living reflects a powerful truth found throughout scripture: the number 40 marks a season of transformation. After 40 days and nights, the earth was renewed. In that same spirit, we believe time spent tending the land can rebuild what feels broken: in soil, in spirit and in community.

What began as learning how to care for plants evolved into learning how to care for self — and ultimately, how to care for people. That transformation inspired our broader mission: to bring awareness to the importance of balancing “work” activities with “real living” activities, and to help people reconnect with nature, with themselves, and with a slower, more intentional way of living.

In a world that often rewards constant productivity and overlooks rest, nature offered a different model. The land does not rush. It works in cycles. It pauses. It restores. Through time spent growing, observing and tending, we learned that sustainable living — for both people and the planet — requires honoring these natural rhythms.

40 Day Living exists to help make that balance visible and accessible. Whether through plants, educational experiences, or shared spaces of learning, we encourage people to step out of urgency and back into relationship — with the land, with their bodies and with the present moment. Caring for the earth and caring for ourselves are not separate acts; they are deeply connected.

This understanding now shapes everything we do. From how we grow and source plants, to the experiences we offer, to the way we speak about wellness and stewardship, our work is guided by the belief that real living includes rest, reflection and reconnection — not just output.

Every seed planted at 40 Day Living represents an intentional choice to slow down, to nurture what matters and to build something lasting. Our commitment is not only to the health of the soil, but to the well-being of the people and communities we serve.

When you invest in 40 Day Living, you’re investing in more than a small business. You’re supporting a vision that values balance over burnout, connection over convenience and stewardship over excess — planting the seeds for a healthier, more grounded future, one season at a time.
