Most of us say we want peace, but when we finally get it, we don’t know what to do with it. Silence feels strange at first. We live in a world that trains us to fill every gap: with a podcast, music, social media scrolls, or background TV. But here’s the truth: your brain and body are desperate for moments without noise.
If you want to start, you don’t need a retreat or a day off. You just need five minutes. Here’s how to make it count:
- Choose a spot – It can be your porch, a quiet corner of your bedroom, or even your parked car before you go inside.
- Set a timer for five minutes – Knowing it’s only five minutes keeps your mind from resisting.
- Close your eyes or soften your gaze – Let your body know it’s okay to slow down.
- Focus on breathing – No need to force it, just notice it. If your mind wanders, gently bring it back to your breath.
- End with gratitude – When the timer goes off, think of one thing you’re thankful for before you move on with your day.
Over time, those five minutes won’t feel long enough. You’ll crave more space, more stillness. You’ll also notice that the people and problems that once felt overwhelming don’t carry the same weight after you’ve given your mind this pause.
Silence is a muscle. The more you practice, the stronger your peace becomes.
